BNY opens regulated digital asset custody in the European Union under MiCA.
One of the first global systemically important banks to safekeep crypto-assets in the EU. Custody is where institutions begin.

BNY has extended its Digital Asset Custody platform to select institutions in the European Union under MiCA, becoming one of the first global systemically important banks to offer regulated digital asset custody in the region. The step follows the addition of The Bank of New York Mellon SA/NV, its European banking entity, to ESMA's MiCA register in July 2026, which permits custody, administration, and transfer services for crypto-assets.
The platform, launched in 2022, uses multiparty computation, segregated client wallets, and controlled storage of private keys. It currently supports BTC, ETH, SOL, and USDC, with the stated ambition to extend to broader crypto-assets and stablecoins. BNY describes custody as the foundation for its wider digital asset work in digital cash, tokenised assets, payments, settlement, and collateral mobility.
The Calveris reading
Institutions do not begin with a trade. They begin with a custodian they can name to their board. MiCA gave Europe a register; a systemically important bank on that register gives European allocators the same answer their American counterparts have had.
We note the asset list, two base-layer tokens, one high-throughput chain, one dollar stablecoin, as a fair picture of what an institution actually needs to hold today. The breadth will come. The licence had to come first.
